The Spirit of Giving

Volunteerism and the spirit of the holidays are alive and well on the Metropolitan Campus. To cite a few examples, the International Student Association ran a clothing drive, the Graduate Assistant Association collected food, campus ministry and Gourmet Dining sponsored their annual “Why Hunger” campaign and athletes helped package and deliver teddy bears.

Every Tuesday between November 19 and Christmas, athletes from the Metropolitan Campus are volunteering their time to participate in the The Record’s Bear Hugs for the Holidays program. The program arranges for 10,000 teddy bears to be shipped to 28 area hospitals and United Way agencies and distributed to children and senior citizens.

Jennifer Quirk, front row, second from left, director of student-athlete support services (Metro), is pictured with student athletes, front row from left, Christa Iwanski, soccer; Keri Rowlands, volleyball; and Melanie Porterfield, track and field; and top row from left, Christopher Bowers, tennis; and Brian Boucher, baseball.

The Graduate Assistant Association of Silberman College conducted a nonperishable food drive, with proceeds going the Center for Food Action in Englewood, N.J. Pictured carrying packages collected on campus to a van for delivery to the center are, from left, graduate assistants Juan Quinones and Shyam Vajjhala with Michelle Vaccaro, MBA program adviser, Silberman College, and assistant to the provost for special projects (Metro); Donald Zimmerman, director, MBA in management for health systems professionals (Metro); Gloria Ermoian, administrative assistant, student services, Silberman College (Metro); undergraduate student Joelle Francisco; and Lissette Garcia, associate director, Educational Opportunity Fund (Metro).
