Dr. Jacob Lomranz

Global Visiting Lecturer

I was born in Germany and raised in China. I have lived in Israel since 1949. In 1965 I received my B.A. in psychology and philosophy from the Tel-Aviv University and did my graduate work in Psychology at Duke University, North Carolina where I earned my Ph.D. in 1971. I am a certified Clinical Psychologist and supervisor and did my clinical work in McLean Hospital in Boston. In 1970 I joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Tel-Aviv University where I presently serve as Professor of Psychology.

I am the founder and director of the Neuropsychological Unit for Rehabilitation of Severely Head Injured and the Director of the Clinical Program at the Department of Psychology. I developed a curriculum for the study of aging at the university, established the Unit of Adulthood and Aging in the Department of Psychology and later was the founder and director of the Interdisciplinary Herceg Institute of Aging at Tel-Aviv University. I have developed methods of treatment for adults and elderly. I am also the founder and director of a psychological service for the aged in nursing homes, recognized by the Ministry of Health and the Israeli Psychological Association as a practicum and intern placement for clinical psychologists. I serve as a chairperson of the Committee for the Establishment of a Graduate Department of Adulthood and Aging at Tel-Aviv University. In addition, I also serve as consultant to various organizations.

I have many research and consulting contacts at a number of universities and homes for the aged, in Israel as well as overseas, including Jewish homes and organizations in Europe and the United States. I have had numerous appearances in the public media: the press, the radio and television.

My teaching and research interest are in the areas of Clinical Psychology, Adult Development, Groups Dynamics and interpersonal relationships in groups, the field of personality – where I have developed a theory of aintegration, Creativity in later life, Mental Health in the Aged and long-term effects of the Holocaust.

Finally, I am the head of the Frenkel Research Fund for Research on Holocaust Survivors at the Tel-Aviv University.

I have received many research grants, and authored three books and over one hundred scientific publications. I served as a visiting Professor at the University of Boston, the University of California in San Francisco and the Brookdale Institute on Aging at the City University of New York. I also served as an officer or a board member of many organizations including the council of the Israeli Psychological Association and held leading positions in the Israeli and European societies of Gerontology. I was recently elected President of the Israeli Gerontological Society and its representative in the European region of the International Association of Gerontology. I am the father to two adult children who work in the fields of filming and design.
My hobbies include painting, literature and traveling.
