Haspel, Ph.D.Assistant Professor, Communication StudiesKathleen C. Haspel earned her Ph.D. in Communication from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and an M.A. in English Literature from the City University of New York. Her areas of specialization include Language and Social Interaction, Institutional Discourse, and Narrative Studies. She is Vice Chair of the Language and Social Interaction division of the National Communication Association.Her teaching and research centers on intersections of interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication by examining the discourse and stories of primarily lay participants in various communication contexts: broadcast, print, and electronic news (calls to radio and television talk shows, eyewitness accounts in newspaper and television coverage; citizen posts to internet news forums), emergency service (transplant coordination calls and 911 calls), and public deliberation (citizen participation in public school meetings). Dr. Haspel has published her work in the Journal of Communication, American Communication Journal, The Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Theory, The Prettier Doll: Rhetoric, Discourse, and Ordinary Democracy edited by Karen Tracy, James P. McDaniel, and Bruce Gronbeck (University of Alabama Press, 2007), and the International Encyclopedia of Communication. She has been a consultant to the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation of Edison, NJ, a television commentator on KDVR in Denver, Colorado, and a radio disc jockey on WFMU (East Orange, NJ) and WSIA (Staten Island, NY).
