Director, Programs in Language, Culture, and Professional Advancement (PLCPA)

Programs in Language, Culture, and Professional Advancement (PLCPA) offers courses in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for international students and any interested domestic students. These courses are called English for Professional Success (EPS). The EPS courses have a dual purpose: to ensure the academic as well as professional success of international students. Students will be exposed to the different genres of academic and professional discourse in their different field of studies.

ESL/EPS Placement Test

While students may have achieved the TOEFL score required for admission, further development in English proficiency may be necessary to support academic achievement and to ensure effective progress in the student’s chosen academic program.

All new international undergraduate and graduate students, except for those who are exempted, are tested for English proficiency when they arrive for International Student Orientation. New international students may not assume that they are exempt from this English test even though they have had many years of English education in their home countries or abroad.

Depending on test results, new international undergraduate and graduate students may be placed into an EPS course that focuses on the student’s major field of studies.

Undergraduate students who are placed into an EPS course must take the class and co-requisite lab and will be charged tuition upon registration. Starting in Fall, 2007, graduate students who are placed into an EPS course and maticulate into a University College degree program are required to take the class and co-requisite lab and will be charged a nominal fee. Graduate students who are placed into an EPS course and matriculate into degree programs in Silberman College and Petrocelli College will be recommended to take the class and co-requisite lab and will be charged a nominal fee if they enroll.

EPS Courses

Students will take an EPS course that is relevant to their program of study.

The courses offered are:

* EPS 1101: English for Professional Success: Business and Hotel and Restaurant Management
* EPS 1102: English for Professional Success: Engineering and Computer Science
* EPS 1103: English for Professional Success: Nursing and Allied Health, Natural Sciences, and Psychology
* EPS 1104: English for Professional Success: Criminal Justice, Pre-Law, Political Science, and History
* EPS 1105: English for Professional Success: Still Exploring,Communication, Education, and Art

All the EPS courses have a co-requisite lab. Students will take only one EPS course. However, to exit the program, a student must meet the learning objectives set by the curriculum. Students who fail to meet the minimum standards required to pass the course will have to repeat. Upon exiting the program, undergraduate students will take the English composition (ENGL 1101) course, while graduate students do not need to take any other English or writing courses unless required by their own department.

Application of Credits for EPS Courses

International undergraduate students can fulfill a free elective (upon approval of individual academic departments) or partially fulfill the Language and Culture Liberal Arts requirement upon the successful completion of the EPS course:

* Silberman College of Business: 3 credits may be applied as free elective.
* Other Metropolitan Campus programs: 3 credits may be applied to meet foreign language requirements.

The credits for the EPS courses are not figured into the grade point ratio for graduate students.
