WFDU 89.1 to host country music icons for 40th anniversary reunion

WFDU 89.1 FM will host a reunion of the WHN 1050 AM air staff to mark the 40th anniversary of WHN switching to a country format in 1972. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The New York station was country for fifteen years, during which time it became the most listened to country radio station of all time.

"When the format later changed, there was no longer a full-time country station in the area. WFDU currently programs two significant country programs on Tuesdays (Big Apple Country) and Thursdays (Let There Be Country)," says Carl Kraus, general manager of WFDU FM and director of telecommunications for Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Radio personalities reuniting on air include Country Radio Hall-of-Famer and SIRIUS air personality Lee Arnold, WCBS-FM morning personality Dan Taylor, Press Communication's Mike Fitzgerald and Jessie Scott. Gene Ladd will do the news, just like in the 1970s. WHN music director Pam Green will schedule the music. WHN program director Ed Salamon will oversee the event.

On the day before the WFDU/WHN reunion, Salamon's book "WHN: When New York City Went Country" will be released by Archer Books. WHN staff and fans will gather for a panel discussion at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 at Hill Country, 30 West 26th Street in Manhattan.

The WHN reunion on WFDU will be available via audio streaming on the station's website.
