NJ Assemblywoman and Others to Speak for Women’s History Month at FDU

MADISON, N.J. (February 15, 2012 )—In honor of Women’s History Month, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s “Politics on the PublicMind” lecture series will feature distinguished female guests throughout the month of March, including NJ Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter; Mayor Helen R. Le Frois, Mayor of Newton, N.J.; and Dr. Krista Jenkins, associate professor of political science at FDU.

Jenkins will speak on March 1, Assemblywoman Sumter will speak on March 8, and Mayor Frois will speak on March 29. All of the events will take place on Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Lenfell Hall. 

Jenkins, an associate professor of political science at FDU, studies generational differences and political engagement. Jenkins is also an associate with FDU’s PublicMind Poll. Her latest book, “A New Engagement? Political Participation, Civic Life, and the Changing America Citizen,” addresses how young people differ politically from older Americans and analyzes their turnout in elections.

Assemblywoman Sumter is an FDU alumna, and has served in a variety of capacities in health related fields, besides serving as Assemblywoman, Sumter is also the director of Behavioral Health Services at Mountainside Hospital. She represents Legislative District 35, and is a member of the Commerce and Economic Department and Health and Senior Services Committees.

Frois, Mayor of Newton, N.J., was first elected in 2008. She currently serves on the Planning Board and is a member of the Main Street Newton Group where she serves as representative for the Town of Newton. Frois is also the director of development for the Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Inc.
