March 21 is FDU Day for “A Journey for 9/11”
Teaneck, NJ (February 27, 2008) — Fairleigh Dickinson University has declared Friday, March 21, 2008, as “FDU Day for A Journey for 9/11.” George Martin, former Giants football star, FDU alumnus and New Jersey resident, has made national headlines in his “Journey for 9/11.” Martin is walking from the George Washington Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge to raise money for 9/11 rescue workers who have significant health problems.
With a goal of $10 million, Martin left New Jersey in September and is now in Oklahoma. Along the way, he has spoken at countless town meetings, schools and special events to raise awareness of this cause.(Visit www.ajourneyfor911.info to follow George Martin’s walk across America.)
Kenneth T. Vehrkens, dean of FDU’s Petrocelli College and a member of the Journey for 9/11 Board of Directors, will join Martin in New Mexico on March 21 and walk 20 miles alongside him. To support Dean Vehrkens, “FDU Day for A Journey for 9/11” is seeking pledges for this cause.
I am honored to support this project,” said Vehrkens, “George is a wonderful humanitarian who has long been devoted to serving others. Only someone of his character, compassion and commitment could attempt and complete such an incredible journey. He has inspired to many people.” I am hopeful that this day will garner significant support and that pledges—anywhere from $1 to $100 per mile that I walk—will come from many New Jersey residents who support this cause.”
Reaching out to the university community and the more than 100,000 alumni, FDU President J. Michael Adams said, “George Martin has captured the hearts of thousands of people with his journey. It is a wonderful tribute to the human spirit and a moving story of one person’s quest to honor the courage of those he calls ‘true heroes.’ I am honored to pledge my personal support.”
To become a part of this special day, checks should be made out to “A Journey for 9/11” and mailed to Denise Wisniewski, H-DH1-02, Fairleigh Dickinson University, 1000 River Road, Teaneck, NJ 07666 by Friday, March 14.
