"The Vagina Monologues" to be Performed at FDU

Teaneck, NJ (February 24, 2011) – Eve Ensler’s controversial collection of vignettes, “The Vagina Monologues,” will be presented Tuesday, March 4 and Wednesday, March 5, 2011 at 8 p .m. in Russell H. Ratsch Experimental Theatre, Lower Level, University Hall on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan campus.
General admission is $10; FDU students and seniors $5. Proceeds for this one-evening presentation will benefit the Vday Organization and the Shelter Our Sisters organization.

This controversial play was launched on off-off- Broadway and went on to win the coveted Obie. Each year, charity performances of the monologues raise money for Ensler’s cause, which is to stop violence against women and girls. Ensler does not accept compensation for any productions, as long as the “Monologues” raise money for a charity that aids women who have been violated.

Among the many actresses who have taken part in the world-wide productions are Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Swoosie Kurtz, Glenn Close, Kimberly Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. The New York Times has called Ensler "the Messiah heralding the second wave of feminism."

In 1998, the term “V-Day” was inaugurated by a coalition of feminists to describe their new version of Valentine’s Day, and is often presented as another voice for Valentine’s Day activities.
