Michael Smallis Honored at Convocation Ceremonies
Recipient of a Pillars of Fairleigh Dickinson Award
Teaneck, NJ (October 8, 2001)—At Fairleigh Dickinson University’s annual Academic Convocation, held October 3 on the Teaneck-Hackensack Campus, the university community celebrated the opening of the academic year and honored distinguished faculty and outstanding staff members.
At this year’s ceremony, West New York resident Michael Smallis was one of four recipients of the University’s Pillars of Fairleigh Dickinson University Award. This award is given annually to recognize exceptional individuals within the university who, over time, have made extraordinary contributions to the character and quality of the institution, its community and culture.
Smallis, Associate Dean of Students on the Florham-Madison Campus, has served the University with intelligence, compassion and fierce loyalty in an incredible range of activities. His leadership is always evident, whether serving as president of the Professional Administrative Senate and chair of the Florham-Madison Campus Council, or administering the Freshman Seminar program.
He has taken responsibility for he judicial process on campus and advising various student clubs and organizations. His level of commitment is illustrated by his membership in more than 25 committees and task forces in the last five years alone.
He has touched nearly every facet of the University and his impact extends into the surrounding community. A member of the Madison Town Council University Relations Committee, he fosters civility and partnerships with students at Drew University and St. Elizabeth’s College. A dynamic presence in the community, he is active with many causes, including the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the New Jersey Buddies program and New Jersey Voices for Life.
In presenting the award, Peter Falley, Provost of the Florham-Madison Campus, said "Michael has proved a guiding light for students and inspiration to colleagues, and has profoundly enhanced FDU’s collegiate environment. He is indeed a worthy recipient of the Pillars of Fairleigh Dickinson Award."
