Opera at Florham to Hold “Harvest of Opera Arias” Cabaret November 6

Madison, NJ (October 20, 2011) — The Opera at Florham will continue their season with a 16-song cabaret on Sunday, November 6 in Lenfell Hall at the College at Florham of Fairleigh Dickinson University. Tailgating begins at 2 p.m. and the show starts at 3 p.m.

The cabaret will consist of classic opera favorites, performed by local pianist John Pivarnik, sopranos Catherine Meyers and Jacqueline Leiva, and bass-baritone Hyong Sik Jo. The venue, elegant Lenfell Hall, was the drawing room of the Twombly family when what is now known as Hennessy Hall was their 100-room mansion.

The audience will be treated to La Calunnia from Barber of Seville, Mi Chiamano Mimi from La Boheme, Je Dis from Carmen, and several selections by Mozart: Madamina, Mi trade quell’almo ingrate, In Uomini, La ci Darem la Mano, and Ach, Ich Fules.

Jo has appeared with the Connecticut Opera, Bulgaria’s Plovdiv Opera, Aspen Opera Theater Center, Opera North, Regina Opera, New York Lyric Opera, and several others. His roles include the title roles in Don Giovanni and Gianni Schicchi, Doctor Dulcamara in L’Elisir d’amore, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte, Count Almaviva and Don Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, among others. He was winner of National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, New Hampshire Opera Idol Vocal Competition, Peter Elvins Vocal Competition and Young Opera Singers Competition.

Meyers has, in the past year, sung the roles of Clarissa in Weber/Mahler’s Die drei Pintos with Bronx Opera, Célie in Pasatieri’s Signor Deluso with EnCanta Collective, and Regina in excerpts from Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler with Garden State Opera. She recently sang for President Obama, Vice-President Biden, Former President Clinton and other dignitaries at a private event and has been asked back to sing a holiday party at the VP Residence this winter. She was chosen as a 2010 member of Opera Singers Initiative and in 2008 she was a finalist in the Lotte Lehman Foundation CyberSing Competition.

Leiva returns to the Opera at Florham where she sang in Rigoletto and starred as Annina in La Traviata. She has also recently debuted as Zerlina in Don Giovanni with The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. Leiva has also had roles in Carmen, Turandot, and Pirates of Penzance.

Pianist John Pivarnik of Madison, NJ is organist/choirmaster at Christ Church in Short Hills and also works as a freelance instrumental and vocal accompanist and performs solo recitals frequently in the metropolitan area. He teaches piano privately at his home studio and at Christ Church. 

Refreshments of coffee, tea, juice, and cookies are provided.
