Fairleigh Dickinson University to stage Oklahoma!
Madison, NJ (March 7, 2014) — FDU’s Visual and Performing Arts Department will present Oklahoma!, the classic American musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The Show will open Friday, March 28 and close Sunday April 5.
Written in 1943, Oklahoma! was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration and remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theater still being followed today.
Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road.
That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt and that this new life will begin in a brand new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma. Full of classic standards like ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’, ‘The Surrey with the Fringe on Top’, ‘People Will Say We’re in Love’ and ‘Oklahoma’, this musical is guaranteed to please all the family.
The productions will be directed and choreographed by Cindy Thole. Allen cohen will serve as the musical director.
Ticket prices for the general public are 12 dollars. Tickets for seniors, students, and members of the FDU community are six dollars.
