Make Change Your Family Business Tradition

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship will host a presentation, “Make Change Your Family Business Tradition,” on Sept. 13 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. as part of the O.Berk Company Family Business Forum seminar series. The program will be run in the Rutherford Room of the Ferguson Recreation Center at the College at Florham. Leading family business author and researcher, Joe Schmieder, from the Family Business Consulting Group (FBCG), will present insights on how to successfully create and support positive innovation.

Schmieder’s expertise is in the areas of sibling groups, strategy and growth. He assists family-owned or closely held organizations increase their value through the continuous creation of successful new business opportunities. He works in collaboration with a network of experienced professionals who teach and apply pragmatic knowledge.

Most recently Joe has served as chief operating officer for Custer Workplace Interiors, an office furniture dealer with exclusive territory rights for Steelcase products. Joe successfully guided the dealership through the industry's most severe downturn, adjusting the organization and diversifying product & service offerings to remain profitable and rebound with 20 percent growth. Prior to joining FBCG, Joe served as divisional president at Oliver Products Company, a 114-year-old family business serving the medical, food, and graphics markets.

Established in 1992, The O.Berk Company Family Business Forum is the only organization of its kind in the state. It’s interactive educational programs and peer support groups help members of family-owned firms effectively deal with important issues such as succession planning, conflict management, and organizational strategy.

Part of the Silberman College of Business since 1989, the mission of the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship is to teach and support entrepreneurship and innovation in the academic, business and nonprofit communities.
