Howard Nathenson’s, “Layers” Exhibition at Fairleigh Dickinson University

TEANECK, N.J. (August 17, 2009)—Fairleigh Dickinson University is featuring photographic artist Howard Nathenson’s “Layers” exhibition from September 14 through October 23, 2009.

The “Layers” series is composed of digital prints derived from photos taken by the artist. Using Photoshop, Nathenson layers images over one another until he has an end product that is a semi-abstract composition. Nathenson has compared his layering technique to Pablo Picasso’s idea of “simultaneous expression”: Numerous parts of a subject are seen at the same time in the same image in order to arrive at a truer, more multiplied life-sense, and physical surfaces, textures, colors of objects and scenes are brought out and united. Initially the series had a mostly floral theme and has since expanded to include seashells, plants, and architectural and landscape details.

Nathenson began his career as a painter and draftsman. He received his MFA in painting at the University of California, Berkeley, and has studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. During his career, he has had 22 one-person exhibitions and 14 group exhibitions. Nathenson has said that his photographic work “is based on [his] feeling that people relate their surroundings to their own and other—perhaps imagined—human dramas. I use the still-life venue as a stage, and objects … as metaphors for nature and human forms.”

The “Layers” exhibition will be at the University College Art Gallery at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus, 1000 River Road Hackensack, N.J. 07666. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The reception will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
