FDU’s Library will Host a Discussion on the Koran March 27

MADISON, NJ (March 19, 2013)—Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham Library has invited Dr. Heba Musharraf, a Princeton University lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, to give a free presentation, “Recite & Recall—Knowing the Koran,” to the public on Wednesday, March 27 at 11 a.m. in the Orangérie at the College at Florham’s Monninger Center. The discussion will be followed by a screening of a Greg Barker documentary, “Koran by Heart,” and a question and answer portion.

Musharraf’s presentation will examine the relationship between faith, the Koran, and the role that memorization plays in defining and substantiating the way Islam is lived and experienced. This discussion is part of a semester series that will combine the two themes, “Connected Histories” and “Points of View,” to help students and others explore the diversity, complexity and interconnectedness that exist within what is broadly termed Muslim society. The other two events are April 9 titled, “Mirror, Soul, Vision, Belief—the relationship between Islam and Art,” and May 2 titled, “Unveiled and Unimaginable? Uncovering & Discovering the Ways Islam is Lived.” More information will be released shortly about these two events.

Musharraf has taught Arabic at the college level for seventeen years. She has pioneered a unique comparative and analytical methodology in teaching the Arabic language.

This event is a part of “Muslim Journeys,” a project grant from the American Library Association, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities that the College at Florham Library was awarded this semester. This grant provided the library with twenty-five written texts, four documentaries, and University-wide access to the Oxford Islamic Studies Online database.
