Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Medco School of Pharmacy Receives ACPE Precandidate Accreditation Status
Madison, NJ (July 3, 2012) Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Medco School of Pharmacy has received precandidate accreditation status from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), which authorizes the University to matriculate its first class of professional students in the fall of 2012. The School of Pharmacy received ACPE approval on June 26 based on an on-site evaluation conducted on May 7-9, 2012.
“It’s a colossal accomplishment,” said Ruth Nemire, founding dean of FDU’s Medco School of Pharmacy. “The ACPE precandidate status enables us to welcome our first class. It also verifies that there is confidence in the vision and innovative approach to health professions education that defines FDU’s pharmacy program. We are excited to unveil a dynamic curriculum incorporating technology, a global perspective, and multiple master's degree options.”
The inaugural class in FDU’s Medco School of Pharmacy will consist of approximately 85 students.
“We congratulate Dean Nemire, Executive Associate Dean Mike Avaltroni and the entire faculty and staff of the Medco School of Pharmacy on this important achievement,” University Provost Christopher Capuano said. “The School of Pharmacy will provide our students with an innovative curriculum in a dynamic environment for interactive learning while utilizing the valuable resources of the pharmaceutical companies located in New Jersey.“
The next step in the accreditation process is advancement to candidate status, which will require another site visit by ACPE in the spring of 2013. The pharmacy program is eligible for full accreditation after the first class has graduated. Once accreditation is granted, it will apply retroactively to the classes already in the process of completion, and to those students that have finished the program.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University Medco School of Pharmacy’s Doctor of Pharmacy program has been granted Precandidate status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 135 South LaSalle Street, Suite 4100, Chicago, IL 60503, 312/644-3575; FAX 312/664-4652, web site www.acpe-accredit.org.
Granting of Precandidate accreditation status brings no rights or privileges of accreditation as associated with either candidate status or fully accredited status. Precandidate accreditation status indicates only that planning has taken into account ACPE standards and guidelines and suggests reasonable assurance of moving to the next step, that of Candidate accreditation status. Since Precandidate accreditation status does not create any rights of accreditation under the ACPE standards, it is the opinion of ACPE that graduates of programs of Colleges or Schools of Pharmacy that bear Precandidate accreditation status do not meet the educational requirements for licensure.
