FDU Professor receives Fulbright Scholar Grant

Teaneck, NJ (May 14, 2010) —Fairleigh Dickinson University professor, Mihaela Leonida, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholar grant for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Originally from Romania, Leonida’s grant will take her back to her homeland, where she will be based at the Polytechnic University in Bucharest, the site of her master’s work. She will be conducting research in the bioengineering and biotechnology department on a project “Soft Nanomaterials Used to Stablize ‘Wired’ Proteins.” She will also be teaching graduate students as part of the course “Advanced Analytical Methods for Biomaterials,” focusing on topics in the fields of biosensors and characterization of bioconjugated systems.

Leonida is a professor of chemistry in FDU’s natural sciences department and she teaches at FDU’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, N.J. where she has been for 14 years. Prior to working at FDU, she earned a Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. and an M.S. in chemical engineering from Polytechnic University in Romania.

“My reaction when I heard the news that I had received the Fulbright Scholar grant was pure joy,” said Leonida. “Later came some apprehension. I have to think about bringing the project I pursue to life. But it is much more than that. The main goal as a ‘Fulbrighter’ is to promote mutual understanding between the United States and other nations, to be a ‘cultural ambassador’ to the host country and to be active and involved members of our communities, upon return. That is a tall order.”

FDU President, Dr. J. Michael Adams congratulated Leonida, saying “This award provides incredible opportunities for faculty to expand their scholarship, gain new insights and international experiences and develop relationships with colleagues in other countries.”

The Fulbright Scholar program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State.
