Teaneck, NJ (January 18, 2002) ó In a lecture open to the public, Ambassador Ahmad Kamal of Pakistan will discuss "The United Nations in the 21st Century" on Monday, February 4.

The 6 p.m. lecture at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck Campus, is the first in a series of lectures through the United Nations Pathway Lecture Series, presented by The Ambassadorís Club at the United Nations in conjunction with the University.

Ambassador Kamal served as a professional diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan for close to 40 years until his retirement in1999. He held diplomatic postings in India, Belgium, France, the Soviet Union, Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Korea and with the United Nations in Geneva and in New York.

During his 10 years as ambassador and permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, he held many of the highest elective posts including vice president of the General Assembly. He was the chief negotiator of Pakistan in the Uruguay Round negotiations which led to the establishment of the World Trade Organization.

Ambassador Kamal has written extensively on disarmament, management, multilateralism, global economic issues and information technology. He continues to be a senior fellow of the United Nations Institute of Training and Research and a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions. He is also the president of The Ambassadorís Club at the United Nations.

The Ambassadorís Club is a "virtual" program of interactive out-reach, linking a voluntary association of Ambassadors at the United Nations with students at universities in the United States. The Club is limiting its out-reach program to half a dozen universities in the United States, and Fairleigh Dickinson University is part of this elite group.

Before the lecture, the public is invited to join the University community for light refreshments at 5:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Rutherford Room, Student Union Building, River Road, Teaneck.
