FDU’s library will host a discussion on Islam and art on April 9

MADISON, NJ (March 27, 2013)—Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham Library has invited three New Jersey-based Muslim artists to the April 9 screening of Robert Gardner’s documentary, “Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World.” Artists Mona Abdala Hassan, Faraz Khan, and Basem Hassan, will take part in a discussion about the film as well as about their own work, examples of which will be on exhibit.

This event is free and open to the public. It will take place on Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Orangérie of the College at Florham’s Monninger Center. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer portion regarding the intersection of faith and creativity.

The discussion will examine the ways that art influences and enhances how Islam is lived in diverse societies around the world.

Abdala is an American/Egyptian Muslim painter. Her art is strongly influenced by the issues, concerns, identity, and faith of the emerging American Muslim culture, focusing on spirituality, death, the afterlife and political struggles.

Khan is a visual artist who creates Islamic art and calligraphy with a contemporary touch, combining ink and acrylics. His work incorporates Arabic calligraphy with modern colorful backgrounds, exploring religion and secular themes.

Hassan works primarily in photography and video. He has more than 13 years of experience working as an art director, focusing primarily on location work, directing commercial photo and video shoots.

In connection with this event, there will be a display of paintings by the artists in the entrance hall of the Monninger Center. This event will also include a display of relevant books and materials received by the FDU College at Florham Library as part of the Muslim Journeys grant.

This program was developed in partial fulfillment of “Muslim Journeys,” a project grant from the American Library Association, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, and awarded to the College at Florham Library. This grant provided the library with twenty-five written texts, four documentaries, and University-wide access to the Oxford Islamic Studies Online database.
