The Story and Scandal of Hurstmont

“The Story and Scandal of Hurstmont: A House of the Gilded Age” will be featured on Sunday, October 10th, at 3 p.m. at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham, in Lenfell Hall, Hennessy Hall, 285 Madison Avenue, Madison, N.J.

Janet Forster, a historic preservationist, will present the history of Hurstmont and the restoration challenges it now faces.

Hurstmont, considered architect Stanford White’s crowning achievement, is on New Jersey’s list of Endangered Historic Sites.  An example of the early 20th century country house, designed in the classical Revival Style, it is similar to White’s own house at Box Hill.  This large mansion is nearly 15,000 square feet in area and contains over 30 rooms.

Situated on a 20-acre parcel, elevated and setback from Route 202, it borders the National Park Service’s Jockey Hollow site. Purchased by the current owner, who planned to but did not restore the house, it was left vacant since the 1980s; now there are plans to demolish and subdivide the property.

The afternoon includes a reception with refreshments and music by guitarist Dan Williams.   Admission is $25, payable at the door. No advance purchase is necessary. Students 22 and under have free admission with their student ID cards.

This event is sponsored by Friends of Florham, an organization of area residents whose goal is to advise and assist the University in the care, maintenance and historic preservation of the historically important buildings and grounds of the College at Florham.
