New Jersey Family Business Awards

Sixteen Families to be Honored in the 11th Annual New Jersey Family Business of the Year Awards

Madison, NJ (August 14, 2003) — Sixteen family-owned businesses will share the spotlight at the Eleventh Annual New Jersey Family Business of the Year Awards luncheon, which will take place during an awards ceremony on Thursday, October 16th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Somerset, NJ.

The awards are in two categories — one for companies with annual revenues over $10 million and another for companies with annual revenues up to $10 million. The names of the winners are selected from among the finalists, and will be revealed at the awards luncheon.

The awards program, sponsored by the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University, PNC Bank, and New Jersey Monthly magazine represents the only statewide effort to specifically honor family-owned companies for their significant role in the economy and contributions to the community. Co-sponsors include: Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, McCarter & English LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and PSE&G.

Finalists in the "Over $10 million" category are

AC Coin & Slot Service Co., Pleasantville,NJ, a leading slot machine manufacturer and diversified casino supply company, well known in Atlantic City and the Caribbean. It is the only family grown and operated business of its kind in its industry. Founded in 1978. Two generations.

EP Henry Corporation, Woodbury, NJ, the oldest family-owned manufacturer of unit concrete products in the country and pioneer in colored concrete blocks. Founded in 1903. Four generations.

Grinnel Pavingstone, Inc., Sparta, NJ, led by the Cofrancesco family with various interests including a paving stone manufacturing business, a recycling container service, and a leading stable of American Quarter Horses. Founded in 1959. Three generations.

Finalists in the "Up to $10 million" category are

Capalbo’s Gift Baskets, Inc., Nutley, NJ, a premier retailer of fresh fruit and gourmet food baskets and other specialty food gifts, hand-delivered throughout the New York metropolitan area and shipped nationwide. Founded in 1906. Three generations.

Melick’s Town Farm, Oldwick, NJ, a landmark agribusiness engaged in growing fruits, vegetables and flowers on 300 acres, sold through farm and tailgate markets, pick-your-own and wholesale channels. Founded in 1739. Ten generations.

The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, Toms River, NJ, the premier funeral service provider on the Barrier Islands of the Jersey shore and now the largest family-owned funeral service provider in New Jersey. Founded in 1984. Two generations.

Semifinalists in the "Over $10 million" category are

Englert, Inc., Perth Amboy, NJ, a major East Coast manufacturer of innovative and energy efficient roofing and gutter products with a unique system of on-site service and support. Founded in 1966. Two generations.

Gateway Security, Inc., Newark, NJ, a rapidly growing and diversified security service company providing innovative people solutions. 1979. Two generations.

Lackland Self Storage, Middlesex, NJ, the first self-storage facility in New Jersey and leading innovator using enhanced security and accessibility. 1977. Two generations.

The Louis Berger Group, Inc., East Orange, NJ, one of the largest multidisciplinary consulting organizations in the world with a practice that includes social/economic analysis, engineering design and management, and environmental sciences. Founded in 1953. Three generations.

Watchung Spring Water Co., Inc., Lakewood, NJ, a pioneer in the distribution of bottled water and a leading provider of water and coffee dispensers. Founded in 1903. Four generations.

Semifinalists in the "Up to $10 million" category are

Bograd’s Furniture, Riverdale, NJ, a fine furniture retailer recognized for selling superbly crafted furniture at affordable prices. Founded in 1930. Three generations.

Busch’s Seafood Restaurant, Sea Isle City, NJ, serving large portions of fresh American-style seafood on a menu that has changed little in five generations, and known for providing summer housing to restaurant staff. Founded in 1882. Five generations.

Singer Nelson Charlmers, Teaneck, NJ, creators of The Total Protection Program™, a unique process for ensuring that businesses and their clients have the right coverage, and make the best use of their money, for all their insurance and benefits needs. Founded in 1987, with roots to 1958. Two generations.

Scientific Machine & Supply Co., Middlesex, NJ, a principal supplier of highly-specialize Teflon products for the scientific glassware industry and owning various patents on machinery and product design. Founded in 1951. Three generations.

The Bailey Sisters, Kinnelon, NJ, of the Apple Montessori Schools, one of New Jersey’s oldest and largest Montessori pre-schools, educating children aged pre-school through sixth grade. Founded in 1971. Two generations.
