Beginning in early October, 30 high-achieving pre-engineering students from three innovative Paterson High School Academies (PANTHER, MPACT, and STEM) have been participating in this program --- which is held in the engineering building on FDU’s Metropolitan Campus, Teaneck, NJ. This enrichment program provides valuable exposure to, and experience with, pre-engineering and engineering technology activities. The students work alongside engineering faculty and staff, gaining hands-on experience with various technology-oriented projects and computer activities. Students are bussed to the FDU campus for 12 half-day Saturday sessions. The activities include project-specific instruction and supervised assembly, with emphasis on engineering, scientific principles and relevant mathematics. Students select kits ranging from remote controlled cars, rubber band powered gliders, rockets, robots, bridges, and other structures. The glider project has been completed and students are currently working on rockets. The engineering school provides experienced instructors to guide the students through reading schematics, using tools and test equipment, and follow kit instructions. Students are encouraged to participate in competitions and contests, perhaps using the kits that they built. The School of Engineering and Engineering Technology makes its technology labs available to this Saturday program, with supervised access to all necessary shop and test equipment for construction and troubleshooting. Dr. Edwin Duroy, State District Superintendent, Paterson School System, and Dr. John Sico, Asst. Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction have made this Saturday Engineering Enrichment program possible. Dr. Duroy said "The Paterson Public School District is proud to add Fairleigh Dickinson University to our roster of educational partners. We are delighted to be part of their excellent engineering program. The hands-on approach to engineering will enhance our students’ interest to major in engineering."
