Full-Tuition Reading Instruction Scholarships for Teachers

Applications Now Being Accepted for September Classes

TEANECK, NJ  (Sept. 14, 2009) Fairleigh Dickinson University is now offering full-tuition, multisensory reading instruction scholarships to teachers for its Orton Gillingham Teaching Certificate program, which begins in late September.

Scholarships valued at $11,600 are being offered to teachers in the greater Atlantic City area who are interested in expanding their techniques for teaching students who struggle with reading and spelling. FDUs Orton Gillingham Teaching Certificate is a program  nationally accredited through the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).

This is an excellent opportunity for educators to improve their reading instruction skills while earning credentials that will advance their careers, said Dr. Mary Farrell, director of FDUs Center for Dyslexia Studies. FDU is the only university in New Jersey to offer a comprehensive certificate program in multisensory structured language teaching.

Classroom teachers, reading specialists and special education teachers in grades K-12 are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. Classes taught by FDU faculty meet twice weekly after school in Northfield. The program includes a supervised practicum experience at a 32 Masonic Childrens Learning Center, which is partnering with FDU to fund the scholarships for educators.

Scholarship recipients who complete the 12-credit, four-semester program will earn initial certification from the 32 Masonic Childrens Learning Centers of New Jersey and FDUs IMSLEC-accredited Orton Gillingham Certificate.

To apply, submit an application (available online at www.fdu.edu/dyslexia). For details, contact Grace Hottinger at FDUs Center for Dyslexia Studies at 201-692-2816 or by e-mailing dyslexia@fdu.edu.
