Opera at Florham to Select Winners
Seven aspiring opera finalists, selected from applicants in the Metropolitan area are vying for recognition, prestige and prizes in the Violetta DuPont Opera Vocal Competition on Saturday, April 28, on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham Campus in Madison, N.J. The competition begins at 7 p.m. in Lenfell Hall, The Mansion. General admission to the competition is $20; $10 for students under 21. For ticket reservations, call 908-273-5045.
Prestigious members of the opera community will serve as judges. The panel includes Metropolitan Opera star Licia Albanese, Pamela Gilmore, Director of Opera, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Mariana Karpatova, Thurmond Smithgall, and Alfred Hubay. Licia Albanese for many years defined her hallmark roles of Butterfly, Mimi, Manon, and Tosca with the Metropolitan Opera Company. She is founder and chair of the Puccini Foundation, judges many competitions and serves as directing consultant for several opera companies.
Pamela Gilmore is currently Director of Opera at Rutgers University and also maintains an active studio in New York City. She has taught on the faculty of Manes College of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Bell Canto Foundation of Northwestern University.
Mezzo-soprano Mariana Karpatova, a winner of the prestigious Sullivan Foundation Award and the Puccini Foundation Competition has appeared on the “Live from Lincoln Center” broadcast’s new production of “Hansel & Gretel.” She has appeared with the Sarasota Opera, the Baltimore Opera, and the New Jersey State Opera, and with the Metropolitan Opera in the production of “Elektra.” She is also on the faculty at FDU.
After a 60-year association with the Metropolitan Opera, Alfred Hubay continues as a Consultant to Marketing and Box Office Operations. He is a member of the Board of Glimmerglass Opera and Opera Orchestra of New York and has frequently served on the panel of the Metropolitan Opera Broadcast Opera Quiz.
Thurmond Smithgall has spent his entire professional life in music, as instrumentalist, artist representative, opera producer and distinguished adjudicator for leading voice and vocal music organizations and foundations.
Accompanist to the competitors is Karen Linstedt Delavan, who has held music staff positions with Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and Boston Lyric Opera. Her past performances include master classes with artists Elly Ameling, Haken Hagegard, YoYo Ma, Roger Vignoles and Jonathan Miller.
Previous finalists of the Violetta DuPont Competition are now on the rosters of the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera and other companies here and abroad.
