Susann Demay Honored With Pillar Award
Teaneck, NJ (September 28, 2005) — Paramus resident Susann Demay was honored as a “Pillar” of the Fairleigh Dickinson University community at the University’s convocation on September 28, 2005.
Demay is the director of the Academic Resource Center on the Metropolitan Campus, Teaneck, NJ.
The Pillar Award is given annually to recognize exceptional individuals within the University, who over time, have made extraordinary contributions to the character and quality of the institution, its community and culture.
In presenting the award, Metropolitan Campus Provost Joseph Kiernan noted “Your infinite patience, exemplary professionalism and heartfelt devotion have helped hundreds of students overcome hurdles and succeed academically, and earned you widespread respect and acclaim. Constantly upbeat and always encouraging, you never turn away a student in need, whether the need involves studying for an exam, critiquing a paper or providing a pep talk.”
Demay has been Director of the Academic Resource Center on the Metropolitan Campus since 1990. Previously she was instructor, then assistant director of the Learning Center. Demay has been an active member of many committees, including Wellness, Orientation, Campus Budget and Special Needs. She is a member of the Metropolitan Campus Council and the New Jersey Test Administrators Special Interest Group (NJTASIG).
The Academic Resource Center on the Metropolitan Campus assists faculty in providing additional instruction for students in need of tutorial and remedial services, and promotes active learning and independent thinking, encouraging the student to become self-directed. During the 2004-2005 year, the staff of three full-time and 25 part-time employees completed 13,890 contact hours of tutoring in individual, small group and developmental lab sessions.
Demay is a graduate of Hunter College, New York, where she majored in psychology and education. In addition to her Master of Arts in Teaching from FDU, she has earned a Certified Teacher of Handicapped Students Certificate and is a Certified Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant.
