Camp Discovery Offers Summer Fun
Three Sessions Available in July and August
Camp Discovery Offers New Trips/Activities/Leadership Training Madison, NJ (March 30, 2005) — Registration is now open for Camp Discovery, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s summer-fun day camp program for children entering grades one through seven. The camp includes an Explorer class and several new field-trip destinations, and introduces a new Leadership Training Class for those entering seventh and eight grades.
Offered for six weeks in three sessions, from July 1 through August 12 at each of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s two New Jersey campuses, the Metropolitan Campus, Teaneck, and the College at Florham Campus, Madison, Camp Discovery features activities including science (chemistry, biology, physics, archeology, aerodynamics), arts and crafts (cartooning, drawing, painting), theater and recreation in addition to field trips.
Field-trip destinations this year include Dorney Park, Allentown, Pa., Wild West City, Netcong, NJ, the Powerhouse Studios, Paramus, NJ, Medieval Times, Lyndhurst, NJ, and the Funplex, East Hanover, NJ. Rounding out the summer trips is a visit to New York to see the Broadway production of “The Lion King.”
A “Leader in Training Program” is being introduced this year for tweens entering eighth and ninth grades. During the two sessions, from July 18-July 29, and then from August 1-August 12, participants will have recreational activities, and two workshops on leadership skills while working with counselors to gain real life leadership experience. Each session will also include three trips.
Explorer classes included in the Camp Discovery program are built around the scheduled field trips. The children use computers and the Internet to learn about their destinations, plan their field trip days and then explore related topics. As a hands-on activity last year, the group built roller-coaster models and also designed their own theme parks before the Dorney Park trip. The Friday game day includes introductions of games from around the world as well as those of the United States.
Camp Discovery runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Monday-Friday; extended care hours from 7:45-8:45 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m. are available. Care time after 5:30 p.m. will be available if prearranged.
