“Afghanistan: Cultural Geography of Conflict” Discussion on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham: Related Maps on View

Madison, NJ – November 6, 2009 – The public is invited to a discussion led by David Rosen, “Afghanistan: Cultural Geography of Conflict” on Thursday, November 12, in the Library’s Orangerie, on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham. The discussion/conversation at 4 p.m. will be preceded by a reception and viewing of the library’s collection of geographical maps of Afghanistan. The maps will be displayed until January 10, 2010 and may be viewed during library hours.

Dr. Rosen, professor of Anthropology, has been with FDU’s Becton College of Arts and Sciences Department of Social Sciences and History since 1981. He teaches Cultural Anthropology and Anthropology of Children and Childhood on the FDU’s College at Florham. Rosen was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award for Research and Scholarship in 2008.

This November 12th program is part of the The Kite Runner Project, a series of enrichment events tied to the assigned reading of the best seller by that name. The themes of friendship, betrayal, forgiveness, the Afghan class structure, and father/son relationships as found in the book were integrated into the College Writing Program’s curriculum. Discussions led by various faculty members have touched on Afghan social structure, and the psychology of evil and the abuse of power. The exhibition includes, in addition to the maps, books and photographs (two by Steve McCurry), images from both historic and current Afghanistan.

The maps exhibition will be on display at FDU Library from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 11 p.m., Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday, 2 – 10 p.m. The Library is located at 285 Madison Avenue, Madison, N.J. The exhibit and presentation is free and open to the public. For more information call 973-443-8515 or x8516.

The College Writing Program, the Department of Social Sciences and History and The College at Florham Library are sponsoring this event.
