The O.Berk Company Family Business Forum Line Up Announced

MADISON, N.J. (February 6, 2012)—Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship has announced the six programs which will be run in 2012 as part of the annual O.Berk Company Family Business Forum seminar series. The seminars are specially designed to address the unique challenges family business’s face today. The wide range of topics this year include keeping family values, navigating wealth, running a successful global business, and cyber security. The seminars are scheduled from February through November and are free and open to the public.

On Feb. 21, guest speaker, Dr. Jeanne Weikert of the New Life Institute will present family business conflicts using an interactive case study in her presentation, “Creating Harmony in Your Family Business.” Members will leave the session with an increased understanding of the dynamics of their own unique situation as well as the subtle ways that a family business can impact their personal lives.

On April 5, family business advisor Katie Dreghorn-Linden, of Relative Solutions, Inc., will present on how “Keeping Family Values Alive Across Generations” is important. Dreghorn-Linden will examine ways to develop family values and point out common missteps. 

On May 31, an interactive program is scheduled to discuss the topic of “Expert Insights: Building an Effective Board of Directors/Navigating Wealth through Economic Turbulence.” Representatives from the firms sponsoring the Forum will be on hand to provide insights and advice on these issues. 

On Sept. 13, leading family business author and researcher, Joe Schmeider, from the Family Business Consulting Group, will present on how to “Make Change Your Family Business Tradition.” Schmeider will explore the question many family business’s face: “How does a family continuously refresh and diversify its business?”

On Oct. 24, representatives of the Forum-sponsor organizations will provide vital information during the discussion entitled, “Expert Insights: Going Global: What you Must Know to Have a Successful Global Business.” This session will give business owners the information they need to successfully launch a presence in the global marketplace.

On Dec. 6, the discussion will focus on “Cyber Security: Information Any Business Owner Should Know.” Several companies have been driven out of business because of security hacking. In this session members will find out why this is happening, who the perpetrators are, and what you can do to protect yourself and your family business.

Established in 1992, The O.Berk Company Family Business Forum is the only organization of its kind in the state. It’s interactive educational programs and peer support groups help members of family-owned firms effectively deal with important issues such as succession planning, conflict management, and organizational strategy.  

Part of the Silberman College of Business since 1989, the mission of the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship is to teach and support entrepreneurship and innovation in the academic, business and nonprofit communities.
