Statewide Competition for High School Students Searches for New Jersey’s Best Business Ideas

Madison,  NJ (January 25, 2010) — Calling all New Jersey high school students with bright ideas. The “2010 New Jersey Business Idea Competition” is now accepting entries seeking New Jersey’s best, commercially feasible business ideas. 

Now in its seventh year, the program is open to all NJ high school students (9 – 12 grades). The deadline for applications is February 19, 2010.  Winners will be announced and honored on the evening of March 26, 2010, at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham, Madison, NJ. 

The competition divides the state into three regions: north (Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Morris, Essex, and Warren Counties); central (Hunterdon, Somerset, Union, Middlesex, Mercer, and Hudson Counties); and south (Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, and Cape May Counties). 

Each region will recognize 4 finalists and 8 semi-finalists who will be awarded $250 and $100, respectively. In addition, a winner will be chosen from each region and receive an additional $150 each plus a special prize from the New York Jets. All winners will also receive plaques or certificates at the awards ceremony.

James C. Barrood, Executive Director of the nationally recognized Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship at FDU said, “The objective is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among New Jersey’s high school students. We want to recognize those who develop the brightest and most commercially feasible ideas. They are, after all, the future business leaders of our state.” 

The program is administered by the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies, part of FDU’s Silberman College of Business. In recent years, the center’s undergraduate program has been ranked as high as 7th nationwide by the Princeton Review and its graduate program, 19th.  In addition, it was awarded the 2008 Small Business Advocate award from the NY Enterprise Report.

The competition will be judged by the faculty of the Rothman Institute, part of FDU’s Silberman College of Business. Sponsors include the Edison Venture Fund, Bank of America, New York Jets and NJ 101.5 FM.
