International Education Week
Fairleigh Dickinson University is holding a weeklong, bi-campus celebration of International Education Week starting Friday, November 13. Various events and activities have been organized to highlight the importance of global education and to generate a greater appreciation for the diversity of the University community.
Bi-campus Events, Activities
On Monday, November 16, the Metropolitan Campus and the College at Florham will both hold International Dress Day, which encourages everyone to wear clothing that reflects their culture or heritage.
Showcasing the University’s focus on global education, two United Nations Pathways events will be held that week. Ambassador Liu Zhenmin, deputy permanent representative of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, will talk about “China and Its Role in the World” in a United Nations Pathways lecture on Wednesday, November 18, 6:30 p.m., in Lenfell Hall, Hennessy Hall, College at Florham. A bus will be provided to take students from the Metropolitan Campus to the College at Florham for this event. The bus will depart the Student Union Building at 4:30 p.m. Seats on the bus can be reserved at the Student Union Building Information Desk. The U.N. Pathways lecture is sponsored by FDU’s Office of Global Learning and is presented in conjunction with The Ambassador’s Club at the United Nations. It will be preceded by a half-hour refreshment/reception period.
In addition, a U.N. briefing on “Children’s Rights: The Challenges of the Next 20 Years” will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City. Passes, which must be requested at least one week before the event, are required. To request a pass, call the Office of Global Learning at 973-443-8876.
Immigration attorney Kate Kalmykov, of Klasko, Rulon, Stock & Seltzer, LLP, will present “Post-student Years: Immigration Options,” which covers H1-B visas, permanent residency and post F1/J1 options, on both campuses. At the College at Florham, the presentation will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Room S-11 of the Science Building. At the Metropolitan Campus, the presentation will be on Thursday, November 19, 3 to 5 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Student Union Building.
Information sessions about the 17-month Optional Practical Training extension for international students holding F1 visas will be held on Tuesday, November 17, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Rutherford Room, Student Union Building, of the Metropolitan Campus, and on Thursday, November 19, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in Room S-11 of the Science Building at the College at Florham.
The Office of Global Learning will conduct Fulbright Information Sessions on Tuesday, November 17, 3:30–4:30 p.m., in Room 2245, Dickinson Hall, Metropolitan Campus, and on Friday, November 20, 10:30–11:30 a.m., in the Sullivan Lounge, Hennessy Hall, College at Florham.
Students interested in studying abroad can explore their options at the Study-abroad Open Houses on Tuesday, November 17, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., in Room 2234 of Dickinson Hall at the Metropolitan Campus, and on Thursday, November 19, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., in the Wroxton Study-abroad Office, ground floor, Hennessy Hall, College at Florham.
Other Metropolitan Campus Events
At the Metropolitan Campus, a celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, will be held on Friday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m., in Wilson Auditorium, Dickinson Hall. Tickets to the event, which is hosted by the Indian Cultural Experience, may be purchased at the Information Desk in the Student Union Building.
A weeklong exhibit on international education will run starting Monday, November 16, in the Weiner Library.
The International Student Association is hosting the first-ever International House of Breakfast (IHOB) on Monday, November 16, 8 to 10 p.m., in the Rutherford Room, Student Union Building. The campus community can enjoy unique breakfast dishes from around the world. The event is co-sponsored by the Multicultural Council, Organization of Latin Americans, BARKADA Filipino Club and PISA Italian-American Club.
On Tuesday, November 17, a Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training panel to advise international students who are interested in working in the United States will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Metropolitan Club, Alumni Hall. Also on November 17, the campus community can watch a documentary while enjoying Indian food, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the Interfaith Chapel. The event is hosted by Hillel, a student organization.
On Wednesday, November 18, members of the campus community can drop by the seventh annual Global Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Jeepers, Alumni Hall.
A three-day run of Neil Simon’s comedy “Rumors” will be performed by University Players in the Russell H. Ratsch Experimental Theatre, Lower Level, University Hall, starting Thursday, November 19, 8 p.m., starring International Student Adviser Kandy Turner. Other members of the cast include Thomas Swanzey, English and associate dean, Petrocelli College (Metro); and students Melissa Dilger, Mike McMahon, Bamidele Ojo, Nelvia Rawheath, Karissa Redd, Nico Stabile, Krishna Udani and Athos Vardouniotis. Other performance dates are Friday, November 20, 8 p.m., and Saturday, November 21, 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 for the general public; $5 for FDU faculty, staff and students and senior citizens. The comedy is directed by Ellen Spaldo, English and faculty adviser, University Players (Metro).
On Friday, November 20, a United Nations briefing on “Understanding Terrorism” will be held. The bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from the Student Union Building. Reservations may be made at the Information Desk of the Student Union Building.
