Update

Marlene Rosenbaum, education and associate dean of general education, University College (Metro), was appointed associate University provost for learning outcomes assessment. She will be responsible for coordinating the University’s learning outcomes assessment, which has become a growing priority for colleges and universities and is a significant requirement for Middle State accreditation.

Vladimir Zwass, computer science/management information systems and deputy director, computer science/management information systems/e-commerce/mathematics (Metro), will present two lectures and conduct a workshop for doctoral students in the Distinguished Professor Series at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from November 29 to 30. He will deliver the keynote address at the Ninth International Conference on Electronic Business in Macau, China, on December 1. Zwass is also scheduled to be the keynote speaker in the Ninth International Conference on Mobile Business and the Ninth Global Mobility Roundtable, which will both be held in Athens, Greece, in June 2010. He will co-chair the joint conference, which is the largest scholarly mobile business conference.

Monifa Brinson-Mulraine, sociology (Flor); Donalee Brown, psychology (Flor); and Anthony Tasso, psychology (Flor), were among the panelists in a Hot Topics discussion on “Domestic Violence and Dating Abuse.” The panel discussion, which was co-sponsored by the Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences and the College at Florham Student Government Association, was moderated by Krista Jenkins, political science (Flor).

Kate Dunsmore, communication studies (Flor), was chosen to receive the 2009 ACSUS (Association for Canadian Studies in the United States) Distinguished Dissertation Award in Canadian Studies for her doctoral dissertation “Mediating Alliance: The Role of the Press in Sustaining Reciprocity in the U.S.-Canada Relationship.” The award will be presented during the ACSUS biennial conference, which will be held from November 18 to 22 in San Diego, Calif.

Jennifer Quirk, assistant athletic director for academics (Metro), and Richard Panicucci, quantitative analysis, assistant campus provost (Metro) and National Collegiate Athletic Association faculty representative, co-presented “The Role of the Faculty Representative in Athletic Academic Advisement” at the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics Region I Conference at St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y.

Two books by Bernard Dick, English/communications; co-director, art/media studies; and coordinator, MA in media/professional communication (Metro), The Merchant Prince of Poverty Row: Harry Cohn of Columbia Pictures and Radical Innocence: A Critical Study of the Hollywood Ten, were reprinted in paperback by the University Press of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.

J. Michael Adams, president, was among a select few college presidents invited to speak at the 2009 TIAA-CREF Institute Higher Education Leadership Conference held from November 5 to 6 in New York City. He participated in a panel discussion on “Change in the Face of Opposition.”

In the Company of Angels, a novel by Thomas Kennedy, creative writing (Flor), received a starred review in the October 12 issue of Publisher’s Weekly. The fall issue of Absinthe, a print journal featuring the best contemporary European writers, will include Kennedy’s four long poems of Dan Turèll in translation, an interview with the poet’s widow and an essay by Kennedy about Turèll. Interviews of Kennedy are online at Authors Audio and at Inside Higher Ed. He also has an essay in Tiferet. Kennedy and Walter Cummins, emeritus, English (Flor), founded Serving House Books for print-on-demand publishing (http://www.servinghousebooks.com).

On October 23 at the College at Florham Professional Administrative Senate (PAS) meeting, PAS President Karen Lewis, senior director principal gifts, University advancement (Metro), presented Valerie Adams, director, career development (Flor), and immediate past president of PAS, with an award for her outstanding service and commitment to the University community. Also during the meeting, Jonathan Wexler, vice president for enrollment management (Metro/Flor), did a presentation for PAS members. He also spoke at the Metropolitan Campus meeting.

The Italian edition of Holy Skirts, a novel by René Steinke, English (Flor), will be published this fall by Alet Press. An Italian edition of Steinke’s earlier novel, The Fires, will also be published next spring.

Aixa Ritz, hotel/restaurant/tourism management (Metro) and member of the Office of Global Learning Faculty Advisory Committee, attended the United Nations’ 62nd Annual DPI/NGO Conference in Mexico City, which was where the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America was signed in 1967. The theme of this year’s conference was “For Peace and Development: Disarm Now!”

Allen Cohen, music (Flor), wrote the critical introduction to a new edition of Charles Gounod’s orchestra piece, “Funeral March of a Marionette,” published in Munich, Germany, by Repertoire Explorer. This piece was used as the theme music for the Alfred Hitchcock television series.

Ruth Hladyk, director of professional development/internship, hospitality/tourism management (Flor), along with some of her students, attended two Educational Opportunity Fund High School Counselor Luncheons. The students demonstrated skills they had learned by working as servers at the event.

Amber Charlebois, chemistry (Flor), and Alexey Teslja, chemistry (Flor), announce that their students, Greg Pirrone and Beatrice Markiewicz, respectively, were both awarded Novartis Science Scholarships by the Independent College Fund of New Jersey.

The Professors, a band that includes Gary Radford, communication studies (Flor), as its guitarist and vocalist, performed at one of the Daniel Pearl World Music Days held at Temple B’Nai Shalom in East Brunswick, N.J. Since 2002, the Daniel Pearl World Music Days, created in memory of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, has grown to include the participation of more than 3,100 performers in 85 countries.

Mark Cosgrove, Petrocelli College (Metro), was promoted to chair of the business department of the County College of Morris, Randolph, N.J.

“The Last Duel,” a short film by David Landau, film/animation (Flor), won an Award of Merit from the Indie Fest.

Walter Cummins, emeritus, English (Flor), wrote “The Way It Isn’t,” in Pif magazine, and “Dreaded,” in the fall issue of Perigee. He also wrote a review in the latest issue of Bellevue Literary Review. Cummins’ new story collection, The End of the Circle, will be published in 2010 by Hopewell Publications, Titusville, N.J.

Judy Moonelis, visual/performing arts (Flor), was invited to create “Brain Cells,” two site-specific sculptural installations in individual prison cells at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pa., in March 2010. Her work will be a visual response to the history of the prison, which employed solitary confinement for all its prisoners and whose approach was once described by Charles Dickens as “the slow and daily tampering with the mysteries of the brain.”

A public stage reading of Written on Her Face, a play by Stacie Lents, theater (Flor), was held at Luna Stage in Montclair, N.J., on November 2. Her play has also been invited for second-round consideration for the Drama League’s New Directors, New Works fellowship.

Marsha Diamond, Petrocelli College (Metro), conducted a seminar on “Survival Tactics for all Foodservice Operators” during the International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The Verbs of Desiring, a chapbook by Renee Ashley, creative writing (Flor), won the New American Press spring 2009 chapbook contest. Her poetry book, The View from the Body, was a finalist in the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Open Book Competitions. Two of Ashley’s poems, “Heat” and “The Poet, Who Has Yet to Identify That Third Person, Confuses Her Feminine Pronouns — And Then Discovers It Doesn’t Matter Anyway Because, Despite All That Effort Not to Be, She Is Her Mother After All,” were accepted for publication in The Journal. Her review of Kurosawa’s Dog by Dennis Hinrichsen will be published in Gently Read Literature, while her poem and an interview of Ashley is posted on Bomb magazine’s Web log.

Nicholas Baldwin, dean (Wrox), was interviewed for the Daily Record article “Fairleigh Dickinson University: Wroxton College in England is an Experience Like No Other.”

Kenneth Vehrkens, dean, Petrocelli College (Metro/Flor), was interviewed for The Record article “Colleges Satisfy Students’ Thirst for Global Knowledge.”

A photo of Kayon McKen, sergeant, public safety (Flor), together with members of the Madison police force, was included in the Daily Record article “Police Seek Heroes to Prevent Drunk Driving: Campaign Encourages Designated Drivers with Pledges for Free Non-alcoholic Beverages.” McKen represented the College at Florham in the “Hero Campaign” designated-driver program, which is a collaboration among the Madison (N.J.) Police Department, FDU, Drew University and Madison bars and eateries that serve alcohol.

Craig Mourton, assistant dean of students for campus community development (Metro), was interviewed for The Record article “For Success in College, Join a Club or Two: Groups Can Boost Learning and Ease Tough Transitions.”

James Barrood, executive director, Rothman Institute (Flor), was quoted in the NJBIZ article “Helping to Keep Business All in the Family,” about the institute’s Family Business Forum.

Catherine Love, director, career development (Metro), was quoted in The Record article “Working to Pay the Bill: More College Students Take Jobs to Help Parents Cover Tuition.”

Charles Schaefer, emeritus, psychology (Metro), was quoted in The Baltimore Sun article “This is Not a Joke: Laughter Therapy Growing in Popularity as Way to Fight Stress.”

Carl Kraus, director, telecommunications, and general manager, WFDU-FM (Metro), was quoted in the Teaneck Suburbanite article “Fairleigh Dickinson University: An Institution That Offers its Students the World.”

In Memoriam

Henry Becton, Sr., trustee emeritus, died on October 25 at the age of 95. He served as a trustee of the University for 46 years, acting as chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee and vice chairman of the board. In 1983, he was awarded an honorary FDU doctor of laws degree. When he retired from the board in 1994, he was elected trustee emeritus “in recognition of his significant accomplishments, his keen insight and his extensive concern for the University.” In 1995, BD donated $1 million to FDU’s School of Nursing [and Allied Health], which was named in his honor. Becton devoted his professional life to the development of BD, the company founded by his father, Maxwell W. Becton, and Col. Fairleigh S. Dickinson, Sr. At BD, he served as executive vice president, chairman of the executive committee of the board of directors and chairman of the board during the years of the company’s greatest growth and expansion. He retired in 1987 and in recent years had been a very active director emeritus. He is survived by five children: Henry Jr., Jean, Jeffery, Cynthia and Lizabeth; 14 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Contributions in his name can be sent to the Henry P. Marybelle Lupow, retired administrative assistant, Petrocelli College (Metro), died on October 19 at the age of 88. She joined FDU in 1972, where she worked for many years as part of the administrative team of the Saturday College, and retired in 2001. An FDU alumna, she received her AA degree with honors in 1991, and a BA degree, summa cum laude, in 1996. She is survived by her children, Susan and Mike. Donations may be made toward a cherry tree in Crestwood Village (Crestwood Village Garden Club, 325 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ 08759) or to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (17 Pemberton Road, Southampton, NJ 08088).
