![]() Campus Communities Participate in Police Exercises Members of the Fairleigh Dickinson University community organized and participated in two law-enforcement drills over the summer, one at the College at Florham and one on the Metropolitan Campus.
The campus department of public safety and law enforcement agencies including eight local police departments (Florham Park, Madison, Morristown, East Hanover, Chatham Borough, Long Hill, Morris Township and Montville), the Morris County Sheriff’s Department, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation participated in the drill on August 13. The exercise presented various scenarios that law-enforcement officials might encounter on a college campus and involved more than 70 role players, including FDU students and resident advisers, and more than 100 law-enforcement officials. Willie Thornton, campus director, public safety (Flor), said that an added benefit of the simulation was familiarizing the local police departments with the FDU campus. Planning is already underway for a similar exercise next summer. At the Metropolitan Campus, an active-shooter exercise was conducted on August 3 after months of discussion among the Teaneck Police Department; Campus Provost Joseph Kiernan (now interim University provost and senior vice president for academic affairs); Robert Greenfield, assistant provost and economics/finance (Metro); Richard Panicucci, assistant provost for campus life and quantitative analysis (Metro); Michelle Heins, dean of students (Metro); and David Miles, director, public safety (Metro). Becton Hall was the setting for various scenarios that enabled University administration and public safety officers to coordinate efforts with the Teaneck Police Department. Role players included FDU students and a police officer from another town, who acted as “the shooter.” Kiernan said, “Exercises such as these are essential to ensuring the security of our community. We will continue to provide opportunities for public safety and the Teaneck Police Department to train together so that coordination remains at an optimal level.” top of this page table of contents for this issue |
