Hackensack River Pathway Under Construction

On the Metropolitan Campus, construction is under way on phase one of the Hackensack River Pathway. This Bergen County project along the west bank of the Hackensack River consists of a paved pathway extending 4,000 feet from the juncture of Johnson Park and the University Plaza complex to the Bergen Academies, all in Hackensack, N.J. On University property, the path runs behind the Rothman Athletic Center, across the front of Dickinson Hall to the footbridge, then behind the softball field to the Bergen Academies property line. The plan calls for a plaza with seating and lighting at the University’s footbridge.

The path will be wide enough for two wheelchairs and in compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to Brian Hague, a county spokesman, the project will cost $1.9 million and take about six months. The construction costs are borne by Bergen County, and the University has granted an easement to the county to construct the pathway through the campus.

A greenway on the east side of the river was completed last year, so the University community will now have two ways to enjoy the river views.
