![]() College Happenings Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences ‘Dead Man Walking’ to Be Staged The final theatrical production of the 2006–2007 season is “Dead Man Walking,” a stage adaptation of the Academy-Award-winning film starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The stage adaptation follows the death sentence of murderer Mathew Poncelet and the efforts of Sister Helen Prejean to overturn his conviction. Remaining performance dates are Friday, April 27, through Saturday, April 28, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 29, at 2:30 p.m. The set design is by Richard Turick, chair, visual/performing arts (Flor), and the lighting is by David Landau, film/animation (Flor). Stephen Hollis, theater and director, theater arts (Flor), is the producer. Tickets for students and the FDU community are $5, all others are $10. In conjunction with the production, a panel discussion titled “Capital Punishment — Where Do We Stand?” was held on April 24 at the College at Florham. Panelists included members of the New Jersey Death Penalty Commission James Abbott, police chief, West Orange (N.J.) Police Department; Kathy Garcia, victims’ advocate and representative of the New Jersey Crime Victims Law Center to the commission; Eddie Hicks, father of a murder victim and representative of Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation to the commission; and Rabbi Robert Scheinberg; Kirk Bloodworth, death-row exoneree; and Ed Martone, BA’73 (Ruth), treasurer/executive committee member, New Jerseyans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. Joseph Chuman, philosophy (Metro) and leader, Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County, was moderator. The event was co-sponsored by the University’s theater arts program, Office of Global Learning and Student Government Association. Film and Arts Festival The Ninth Annual Images Student Film and Arts Festival opens on Wednesday, May 2, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Art Gallery, Rothman Institute, College at Florham. After the opening reception, video screenings, with performances by the FDU Chorus directed by Allen Cohen, music (Flor), will be held from 8:15 to 9:45 p.m. at the Dreyfuss Theater, Dreyfuss Building, College at Florham. All events are free. Student works, including interactive media, computer graphics and Web designs, were selected by a jury of faculty from the discipline. Women Studies Event Becton College faculty participated in a panel discussion on “Gender and Professional Development: Where Are We? Where Do We Go?” which was held at the College at Florham. Panelists were Amber Charlebois, chemistry (Flor); Jennifer Lehr, communication (Flor); Yolanda Hawkins Rogers, psychology (Flor); Katie Singer, college writing (Flor); and Lona Whitmarsh, psychology and director, MA in clinical/counseling (Flor). The discussion was moderated by Krista Jenkins, political science and Robyn Schiffman, English. The event was sponsored by the Women’s Studies Programming Committee. Faculty Forum David Landau, film/animation (Flor), presented “The Art of Interactive Storytelling in Theater and New Media” at an April Faculty Forum event at the College at Florham. Silberman College of Business Institute for Sustainable Enterprise Wins Award The Institute for Sustainable Enterprise (ISE) received a World of Possibilities Award from Unity Learning Environments at the Earth Day Green Tie Gala on April 21 at the Hyatt Hotel in Morristown, N.J. Other recipients were The Cloud Institute, E+Co, Morris Land Conservancy and The Willow School. The award celebrated the critical work of local champions who are forwarding the environmental, economic and social equity principles of sustainability. Family Business of the Year Award Nominees SoughtThe Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies announces that the nomination process for the 2007 New Jersey Family Business of the Year Awards program is under way. The awards program, which is in its 15th year, recognizes both business success and community involvement of small and large family-owned businesses in New Jersey. Clarke Distinguished Entrepreneurial Lecture, “Ten Lessons Learned from One Entrepreneur’s Adventure,” to be given by John Bailye, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Dendrite International, Inc., and an FDU trustee, will take place on Wednesday, May 2, in Lenfell Hall, the Mansion, College at Florham. Tree Planted in Honor of Peter Drucker Last year, the 2006 New Jersey Female Entrepreneur Lecture, sponsored by the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies, featured author, inventor and alumna Doris Drucker, MS’63 (Metro). Drucker, the widow of management consultant Peter Drucker, launched her business 20 years after most people settle into retirement. She invented Visivox, a patented system that translates voice volume to warning lights on a console. At the entrepreneurial event, it was announced that the University wanted to do something to honor Doris, and it would be appropriate to plant a tree on the institute’s property in memory of her husband, Peter Drucker, the renowned business management researcher and theorist. In his remarks College at Florham Provost Kenneth Greene said, “Business students throughout the world owe a debt to Peter Drucker that cannot be repaid. His career as a writer, consultant and teacher spanned nearly 75 years. His groundbreaking work turned modern management theory into a serious discipline. He influenced or created nearly every facet of its application, including decentralization, privatization, innovation and entrepreneurship, empowerment and understanding of ‘the knowledge worker.’” The dedication of the tree was held on April 25 near the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies building at the College at Florham. Women of Inspiration The National Association of Women Business Owners, North Central Jersey Chapter (NAWBO NCJ), with Silberman College’s Institute of Sustainable Enterprise has selected to honor eight women who have made significant contributions through their sustainable leadership in service to the Triple Bottom Line — people, planet and profits. Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies Scholarship and Student Benefit Dinner The International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management held its annual Scholarship and Student Benefit Fund-raising Dinner on April 15 at the Hamilton Park Hotel and Conference Center in Florham Park, N.J. More than 300 guests attended the affair, which was made possible by hospitality/tourism management students, faculty and the Board of Industry Advisers. Students were involved in culinary arts, service management, facilities planning and entertainment. This year’s event was designed to foster a fun-filled global oriented motif, highlighting a celebration of the cuisine of New Orleans. An array of appetizers, entrées and desserts, in addition to a complementary assortment of wines, were served during dinner. According to Richard Wisch, associate dean and director, hospitality/tourism management (Metro/Flor), the generosity of scholarship-dinner patrons has provided more than $250,000 in scholarship funds for many of the school’s 500 students. Wine and Food Classic The annual New Jersey Wine and Food Classic, which benefits the scholarship fund of the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, is being held from April 26 to April 28. On April 26, some of New Jersey’s most notable restaurants featured wine-and-food pairing dinners. A Grand Tasting and Silent Auction is being held in Lenfell Hall, the Mansion, at the College at Florham on Friday, April 27. On April 28, six wine-and-food seminars will be conducted at the Hyatt in Morristown, N.J. George Staikos, hospitality/tourism management (Flor), was the event coordinator. Puerta al Futuro Off-campus Sites Puerta al Futuro has three diplomatic off-campus sites in New York City: a master in administrative science program with a diplomacy and international relations specialization is offered in English at the Swaziland Embassy, while the same course is offered in Spanish to diplomats in the Colombian and Dominican Republic embassies. Paralegal Studies Program Expanded Diana Balasis, associate dean of legal studies, Petrocelli College (Flor), announces the expansion of the paralegal studies program to the FDU Monmouth County Graduate Center in Eatontown, N.J., in spring 2007. Summer ComputerTeens Program Through the Summer ComputerTeens Academic Program, high school students between the ages of 15–18 can earn three college credits while having fun. Starting this year, Multimedia for the Internet is being offered Monday–Friday, July 30–August 10, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Metropolitan Campus. This laboratory course introduces students to tools and techniques for creating interactive design. Practical graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Macromedia Flash MX will be utilized. The basics of interactivity using Flash will complete students’ ideas for a computer game or animated tale. Students will work to consolidate the use of creative elements for a final animation project. Students can choose to take the Multimedia for the Internet course and earn three college credits or attend two separate courses, Developing Creative Ideas and Multimedia Interactivity using Flash, on a noncredit weekly basis. The first week of instruction begins with Developing Creative Ideas for computer games and animated stories and ends with a week of learning Multimedia Interactivity using Flash. The courses will be taught by Yelena Aronson, computer graphics (Metro), and Luis Garcia, art/media studies (Metro). Camp Discovery Leadership Program This summer, Camp Discovery will be offering a Leader in Training Program at both the College at Florham and the Metropolitan Campus. The program, which is in its third season on the College at Florham, is being offered for the first time at the Metropolitan Campus. The program will be offered from June 29 through July 27 at the Metropolitan Campus, and from July 16 through August 10 at the College at Florham. This program offers leadership training, fun activities and trips for students entering grades 8 and 9. Workshop topics include leadership development, team building, conflict management, group dynamics and others. The College at Florham program is starting a waiting list, and the Metropolitan Campus program has limited availability. A second series is planned for fall 2007. Motorcycle Safety The FDU Motorcycle Safety Education program kicked off its 11th season on March 14. In spite of snow on Friday, March 16, two students were able to complete their training. Weekend training for 18 students was also rescheduled due to weather conditions. The program is now in full swing, with classes into the middle of the fall. This year, the Motorcycle Safety Education program is offering a retest option for Basic RiderCourse (BRC) students who failed the riding skills evaluation. This one-time retest option is new to FDU’s 2007 motorcycle season and is being offered to accommodate students’ needs. Instead of retaking the BRC, students who failed the riding skills but passed the knowledge test are eligible for a retest after completing the Additional RiderCourse (A-BRC). This course is available to recent BRC students at FDU (within 180 days) who passed the knowledge test and are looking for more practice time on motorcycles. May is Motorcycle Awareness month. To start the month, Fairleigh Dickinson University has teamed up with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to offer one-day Experienced RiderCourses on a weekend. The statewide goal is to train more than 300 motorcyclists on risk assessment and risk management to negotiate the public roads. There are currently five courses offered at FDU on weekends, which are open to a maximum of 12 students each. Half of these courses have already been filled with group courses for local motorcycle clubs and organizations. The program is under the direction of Joan Leder, senior program director, continuing education (Metro). Discounts are available to University faculty, staff and students through the Office of Continuing Education. Visits to Cyber Crime Training Lab On March 27, 70 high school juniors and seniors from Fair Lawn and Rutherford High Schools visited the Cyber Crime Training Lab in Dickinson Hall, Metropolitan Campus. The students toured the facility and observed demonstrations by Eamon Doherty, administrative science and director, Cyber Crime Training Lab; Kenneth Bruno, BS’04, MS’05 (Metro), who owns and operates his own cyber security company; and Adam Rhein and Dan Andriulli, detectives of the Bergen (N.J.) County Prosecutor’s Office Computer Crimes Unit. Both high schools participate in FDU’s Middle College Program. Students were divided into two groups so that they could watch the demonstrations being conducted in each of the two lab classrooms. They were exposed to new technologies being used as teaching tools in the Cyber Crime Training Lab, and some were able to use the equipment in the hands-on portion of the demonstration. The detectives discussed Internet vulnerability and the possibility of innocently providing information to a predator online. Teachers and chaperones with the students provided positive feedback about the program and expressed their intention to return with different groups of students from their forensics and criminal law classes. Through efforts between continuing education and the Cyber Crime Training Lab, additional tours and demonstrations will be scheduled for students in middle school who are taking related courses. Study-abroad Experience in India The School of Administrative Science announces the creation of a new short-term blended model study-abroad experience to India. The program will provide students with a unique educational opportunity to experience various aspects of culture, diversity, heritage, economy, change and leadership in both an Indian and a global context. It offers an excellent blend of theory and field experiences in a developing country. The Summer II Session courses Leading Culturally Diverse Workplaces (3 graduate credits) and Managing Culture, Diversity and Change in the Global Workplace (3 undergraduate credits) can be used as management electives by students enrolled in the Silberman College of Business MBA and business management programs. There are no prerequisites for these courses. A fee covers the cost for room and board (double occupancy) and ground transportation for eight days. University College: Arts • Sciences • Professional Studies State Senate President and Governor Codey Lectures Then State Senate President and now Acting Gov. Richard Codey, was a guest lecturer at the Metropolitan Campus undergraduate class of Mental Health Issues in the Media taught by Tom Davis, communications (Metro). Davis writes a mental health column for The Record. Codey discussed his early encounters of mental illness, as a teenager observing firsthand the bad treatment of Graystone facilities inmates, his advocacy for the mentally ill and his undercover mission exposing the abuse of patients at New Jersey mental health facilities. He also answered students’ questions, some concerning how the media covered the illness of Codey’s wife. Undergraduate Research Symposium The School of Natural Sciences and the Hudson-Bergen Chemical Society co-sponsored the Ninth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, held on April 13 at Dickinson Hall Cafe, Metropolitan Campus. The guest speaker was Sorin Diaconescu of the New Jersey State Toxicology Laboratory who spoke about “Forensic Toxicology.” All the presenters received certificates and a book (courtesy of McGraw-Hill), and the books for the student awards (highest grade point ratio, graduating chemistry majors from several colleges in this area) were provided by Thomson-Brooks/Cole. Student Art Exhibits The works of graduating art students have been on display at the University College Art Gallery, Room 11, University Hall, Metropolitan Campus, since March. This year’s exhibits will be capped by the FDU Art Students Biennial Exhibition, which will include works from all of the University’s art classes and will run from April 30 through June 8. Wroxton College Corporate Communication Conference The Corporate Communication Institute (CCI), in association with Corporate Communications: An International Journal, announces a Conference on Corporate Communication 2007 to be held Friday, June 1, through Monday, June 4, at Wroxton College, England. Corporate executives and university scholars will meet to exchange information and explore communication from a global perspective. Among the topics to be discussed are: corporate identity, internal communication through mergers and acquisitions, communicating global corporate responsibility, localization and globalization of issues management, role of information technology in the measurement of corporate communication, global education for future leaders, teleworking for business continuity, communicating to diverse workforces, using interactive data for business reporting, how financial marketers project professional credibility and corporation and global health policy development.
