Winter break is right around the corner, and while you are enjoying time with family and friends you can also be polishing your resume and marketing yourself for success. Lynn Lechner, assistant director at the Metropolitan Campus' office of career development offers these tips to stand out from the crowd.

1. Prepare a Resume and Cover Letter. Keep it informative and consistent, and remember nothing is worse than spelling mistakes. Students can submit their resumes to the Office of Career Development for edits and remarks. For more tips and samples check out the Metropolitan Career Development’s website.

2. Sign-up for College Central, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s job search website. Register at to create an access ID and search for job postings.

3. Go shopping! Buy a suit that you can wear for interviews and career fairs. Visit these “dress for success links” for men and women on interview day.

4. Find a volunteer, internship or part-time position related to your major. Winter break is a great time to add experience to your resume and gain valuable contacts for the future. Remember to become LinkedIn with your coworkers and bosses before you leave.

5. Review and practice your 30-second elevator speech. The “elevator speech” or “commercial” is an introduction that should sum up your past experiences and career ambitions in a quick summary. Experts say you have 30 seconds to make an impression on employers, and by practicing yours could set you a part from the herd.
