On September 21st, approximately 40 FDU Students and community members gathered at the FDU-Vancouver campus for the “Be the Change Symposium,” an International Day of Peace event
. Attendees learned about issues affecting sustainability, discovered what they can do to make a difference, and learned how to develop an action plan and succeed in achieving their goals.
The forum was facilitated by Be the Change Earth Alliance, which is a Canadian charitable organization founded in 2005 and focuses on the development of an engagement program to support environmental, social and personal behaviour changes in community, the workplace and in schools. Through community engagement and sustainability education programs, the goal is to empower people to support and inspire one another to adopt sustainable lifestyles and create healthy, thriving communities.
Alejandra Collantes (pictured at right) is a third year business student and a member of the FDU-Vancouver Sustainability Committee. She had this to say about the event:
This Fall, I had the opportunity to be part of the second FDU-Vancouver Symposium "Awaken the Dreamer - Be the Change." As an international student, being able to participate in these types of activities is a privilege due to the extent in which they help me grow.
From a business student point of view, I believe that even though businesses’ goals may require some sacrifices to obtain them, it is still important to raise awareness and remember how we are getting those results. These types of talks do that. They help us remember in our minds and hearts that we belong to a common place, Earth, and that we have to take care of it.
I found it inspiring to see people from organizations like “Be the Change” fight for what they believe and motivate people every day to join groups that actually make changes in the world. At FDU, we have just recently started our own Be the Change circles; I am part of one of them. And even though this new initiative is just taking place I am very excited to see what results come out of it because I know for sure we will start making some significant changes.
The Be the Change Symposium was one of FDU Vancouver’s events to recognize the UN International Day of Peace. The event was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown, in cooperation with Be The Change Earth Alliance and with the support of the Yaletown Business Association and local businesses.
