Spotlight on new faculty: Q&A with Dr. William Toms
Interview by Catherine Krawiec
FDU welcomes Dr. William Toms as one of the new faculty members to the Petrocelli College. Prior to coming to FDU, Toms served in the New Jersey State Police as the commanding officer of intelligence section, as well as the interim deputy superintendent of investigations. His final rank was Major. Toms was also Interim President of Brookdale Community College.
FDU: Tell us about your new position…
WT: I will be teaching in the graduate programs within Petrocelli College, to include the administrative science, student services, and homeland security programs. Most of the courses I teach deal with leadership and the executive management of organizations.
FDU: What sparked your passion in this field?
WT: I love to focus on organizations and strategy.
FDU: What is something that you would like to contribute to FDU?
WT: I would like to give our students the best possible education and best practical advice for starting or improving their careers. I am hoping that my background in public safety, higher education, as well as private business will allow me to help students develop a robust understanding of organizations and relationships.
FDU: What is something that you hope your students will take away from your class?
WT: I know how valuable my education has been to me as a direct result of working with some great teachers, so I hope I can be as helpful to my students. I hope my students look at every situation they face from multiple perspectives as a means of understanding different ways to conceptualize solutions to problems and dilemmas.
FDU: What is something that most people wouldn’t know about you?
WT: I have been an adjunct professor at FDU since 2000 at the graduate level teaching courses in leadership, communication and strategic planning.
