Bausch + Lomb's CEO Brent Saunders Delivers Innovation Lecture
Brent Saunders, President and CEO of Bausch + Lomb delivered the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship’s 7th Annual CEO Innovation Lecture on Monday, December 10, 2012.
In his speech, "The Innovation Landscape - A Vision From Eye Health," Saunders told the audience that innovation can come from less-likely sources such as Human Resources. Bausch + Lomb's HR department created a policy which gives employees eight hours of paid medical leave time for doctor's appointments, in addition to their existing personal and vacation time. The initiative is aimed at improving the health of employees by making it easier for them to get the preventative care they need.
Saunders has made the R&D (Research and Development) process at Baush + Lomb more innovative by changing the focus on choosing what research to do based on customer needs, rather than performing research in a vacuum and then finding a way to apply it.
He also spoke about the necessity of bringing innovation to areas of healthcare outside the company, such as the operation of hospitals and doctor's offices, which have long operated on a system which pays them on a basis of the frequency of patient visits.
