On October 6, 1962, honored guests joined Dr. Peter Sammartino, founder and first president of Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Althea Herald, director of the Teaneck Campus Library, to dedicate the reference center.

Flash forward 50 years: faculty, students, alumni, staff and special speaker State Senator Richard Codey  also an FDU alumnus and former N.J. governor  gather for an anniversary celebration that includes the re-opening of the newly-renovated library theater and auditorium.

"Some people like to say that libraries are a thing of the past," says Metropolitan Campus Provost Joseph Kiernan. "Nothing could be further than the truth. Things may be easier to access on the Internet, but you still have to learn to distinguish sources and communicate with each other. The library is our center of learning."

Speakers praise the treasures stored in the library and celebrate the dedicated staff running the Frank Giovatto Library. In the auditorium, attendees appreciate the completely revamped room, including new flooring, chairs, ceiling and lighting.

Closing the formal part of the program, Codey addresses the crowd, declaring, "It's not just about gathering information. "It's a learning center for me, for you and for everyone else."

Giovatto Library has a collection of approximately 260,500 volumes and more than 900 current periodical tiles and back files. Of special interest are the library's Columbia film archives, and selected presidential papers on microfilm. Originally called Teaneck Campus Library, then known as the Weiner Library, the Frank Giovatto Library was so named in 2010 following a generous donation from John Giovatto, in honor of his late brother, Frank.
