"Burning Interiors": David Shapiro's Poetry and PoeticsEdited by Thomas Fink and Joseph Lease |
|||
|
Shapiro is one of the poets who "care too much," according to critic Paul Hoover, whose essay "The Copy and the Model: David Shapiro's After a Lost Original" is among those Fink (English, CUNY, LaGuardia) and Lease (writing and literature, California College of the Arts) gather here. The contributors explore the emotional and physical architecture of Shapiro's work, and deconstruct his views on art as a representation of life and his deep skepticism about the world and, especially, about the idea of "home." Each essay makes an important contribution to understanding Shapiro's poetics, but to a one the essays are dense with ideas as well as information and make for slow reading. Though the book is enlightening, it will be beyond all but sophisticated readers. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty. --N. M.
