Shakespeare Studies XXXIIEdited by Susan Zimmerman and Garrett Sullivan, Jr. |

The parts are sometimes not expected to add up to more than the whole but, in the case of the Shakespeare Studies series, simply to reflect the current state of criticism of the subject. That goal justifies bringing pieces together in one volume. Shakespeare Studies XXXII (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2005), edited by Susan Zimmerman (Queens College CUNY) with Garrett Sullivan, Jr. (Pennsylvania State), who take over from Leeds Barroll, continues with eight articles (including French theater of Shakespeare’s time, the far less relevant Japanese theater of Shakespeare’s time, a piece by the adventurous Maurice Hunt of Baylor on Coriolanus with the emphasis on anus, etc.), 22 book reviews, and the forum this time round very interestingly devoted to discussing the future of Renaissance manuscript studies, a promising field to watch indeed. There are many journals devoted to Shakespeare and his time and there are various hardcover anthologies published annually. This one is a good journal-as-a-book, superior to (say) Spenser Studies. For Shakespeare Studies, Leeds Barroll deserves considerable thanks. One rejoices to see #32 up to his standard, giving hope that Shakespeare Studies will continue well.
