Book Review Ekaterina Sukanova (City University of New York), in Voicing the Distant (2004, US $39.95) finds Shakespearean themes in the work of Akhmatova, Blok, Pasternak and others. But note: many of the themes are not Shakespeare’s alone, and the likes of Poliakova’s > is not very impressive. Ask: is this worth doing? On the whole, however, the close readings of Russian texts—here the quotations in Russian are translated—do demonstrate the importance of Shakespeare as an international cultural icon.
